What does free actually mean here?+
Five transcriptions per day, counted per IP address and reset every 24 hours. No account, no email, no card, and no length-based trial that expires. The cap exists to keep the compute bill survivable, not to push you into a paid plan.
Is there a catch on the output?+
Not on the text — the transcript is complete and unwatermarked, and you can copy or download it as .txt. The .srt export ends with a one-second cue crediting audiotranscribe.app, because subtitles get redistributed and that credit is what pays for the free tier. Delete it in any text editor if you'd rather not ship it.
How does this compare to other free transcription tools?+
Most free transcription offers are a trial: a fixed number of minutes once, then a paywall, and usually an account before you can hear anything. This resets daily and asks for nothing. The trade is the 25 MB per file cap and no speaker labels — those live on the paid API.
Is my audio used to train anything?+
No. Uploads sit in temporary storage only for as long as the transcription needs them and are purged automatically. The transcript is returned to your browser and isn't saved on our side.
What if I need more than five a day?+
The same model is available as an API at $0.20 per audio-hour with 50 hours included for $10 a month. That works out cheaper than most per-minute pricing once you're past a few hours, and it removes the daily cap, the size cap and the credit cue.
Do I need to install anything?+
No. It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile — Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. There's nothing to download and no extension.
