What does free actually mean here?+
3 transcriptions per day, counted per IP address and reset every 24 hours. Files up to 15 minutes and 15 MB show on screen with no account, no card and no email. For 15 to 30 minutes you give an email and the transcript is sent there. No length-based trial that expires.
Is there a catch on the output?+
Not on the text — the transcript is complete and unwatermarked, and you can copy or download it as .txt. The .srt export ends with a one-second cue crediting audiotranscribe.app, because subtitles get redistributed and that credit is what pays for the free tier. Delete it in any text editor if you'd rather not ship it.
How does this compare to other free transcription tools?+
Most free transcription offers are a trial: a fixed number of minutes once, then a paywall, and usually an account before you can hear anything. This resets daily and asks for nothing. The trade is a 15 MB, 30-minute cap per file and no speaker labels — those come with Unlimited.
Is my audio used to train anything?+
No. Uploads sit in temporary storage only for as long as the transcription needs them and are purged automatically. The transcript is returned to your browser and isn't saved on our side.
What if I need more than 3 a day?+
In the browser, Unlimited is $9 a month: no daily limit, 30 hours of audio a month, files up to 2 hours and 50 MB, and speaker labels. If you're writing code, the same model is available as an API for $10 a month with 50 hours included, then $0.25 per additional hour — no daily cap, no size cap, no credit cue. It's a plan rather than a meter, so at low volume metered APIs cost less; the Whisper API pricing page has the comparison and the crossover point.
Do I need to install anything?+
No. It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile — Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. There's nothing to download and no extension.
