How well it handles German
German is one of Whisper large-v3's best-covered languages. It has among the lowest error rates in OpenAI's published per-language breakdown (https://github.com/openai/whisper#available-models-and-languages). Compound nouns, umlauts and ß come out as normal written German.
Tips for German recordings
- Dialect comes back as Standard German. Swiss German and strong regional dialects have no fixed spelling. Expect the model to write what it hears as Standard German, and to miss more words.
- Proofread long compounds and names. A misheard syllable inside a compound noun changes the whole word. Company and product names are the usual errors.
Recordings that mix German and English
The language is detected from the opening of the recording. If the first 30 seconds are an English intro, a jingle or silence, detection can settle on the wrong language for the whole file. The result screen shows the language it detected. If it's wrong, trim the intro and run it again.

Does it work for Austrian and Swiss recordings?+
Austrian German and Swiss Standard German work well. Spoken Swiss German dialect is harder: you'll get an approximation in Standard German.
Are umlauts and ß kept?+
Yes. The transcript is normal German text and downloads as UTF-8.
Can I transcribe a German Zoom or Teams meeting?+
