How well it handles Hindi
Honest answer: Hindi works, but it needs more editing than Spanish or German. Its error rate in OpenAI's per-language breakdown for Whisper large-v3 (https://github.com/openai/whisper#available-models-and-languages) is noticeably higher. Clear, single-speaker recordings like lectures and voice notes give usable transcripts. Noisy group conversations need a careful read.
Tips for Hindi recordings
- Hinglish is the hard part. English words inside Hindi speech may come back in Devanagari, in Latin letters, or be dropped. Proofread technical terms and names.
- Devanagari, not Roman Hindi. The transcript is written in Devanagari script. If you need romanised Hindi, transliterate it afterwards.
- Record close to the speaker. Mic distance and background noise cost more accuracy in Hindi than in the best-covered languages. A phone held near the speaker beats a room mic.
Recordings that mix Hindi and English
The language is detected from the opening of the recording. If the first 30 seconds are an English intro, a jingle or silence, detection can settle on the wrong language for the whole file. The result screen shows the language it detected. If it's wrong, trim the intro and run it again.

Can I get the transcript in Roman (English) letters?+
Not directly. The transcript is written in Devanagari. Use a transliteration tool afterwards if you need romanised Hindi.
Does it work for Urdu or other Indian languages?+
Whisper also covers Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Punjabi, among others. Accuracy varies a lot between them. Try a short clip first.
Can I transcribe Hindi WhatsApp voice notes?+
