How well it handles Spanish

Spanish is one of the strongest languages for Whisper large-v3, the model behind this tool. OpenAI publishes per-language error rates in the Whisper repository (https://github.com/openai/whisper#available-models-and-languages), and Spanish sits among the lowest. Clean recordings come back close to verbatim, with accents and punctuation.

Tips for Spanish recordings

  • No need to choose a variant. Castilian, Mexican, Rioplatense and Caribbean Spanish all go through the same model. Regional vocabulary is usually spelled correctly, but proofread local names and slang.
  • Fast speech is fine, crosstalk isn't. Rapid conversational Spanish transcribes well. Two people talking at once doesn't, in any language.
  • Subtitles for Spanish video. Download the .srt after transcribing. The subtitles are in Spanish. This tool doesn't translate.

Recordings that mix Spanish and English

The language is detected from the opening of the recording. If the first 30 seconds are an English intro, a jingle or silence, detection can settle on the wrong language for the whole file. The result screen shows the language it detected. If it's wrong, trim the intro and run it again.

FAQ

Can it translate Spanish audio to English?+

No. You get a Spanish transcript of Spanish audio. Paste it into a translator if you need English.

Does it add accents and ñ?+

Yes. The transcript is written as normal Spanish text, including accented vowels and ñ, and downloads as UTF-8.

What about Spanglish?+

Short English words and phrases inside Spanish speech usually come through. Long English stretches can be spelled oddly or skipped. Keep the opening of the file in Spanish so detection picks Spanish.
