How well it handles Turkish

Turkish is well supported by Whisper large-v3. Its error rate in OpenAI's per-language breakdown (https://github.com/openai/whisper#available-models-and-languages) is higher than Spanish or German but low enough for clean interviews, lectures and podcasts to need only light editing.

Tips for Turkish recordings

  • Watch the suffixes. Turkish packs meaning into word endings. One misheard suffix changes tense or person, so read quotes carefully before publishing.
  • Dotted and dotless i. The transcript uses ı and İ correctly. If they look broken on your computer, open the .txt as UTF-8.
  • English terms in Turkish speech. Tech and business words borrowed from English are usually kept in English spelling. Search for both spellings in long transcripts.

Recordings that mix Turkish and English

The language is detected from the opening of the recording. If the first 30 seconds are an English intro, a jingle or silence, detection can settle on the wrong language for the whole file. The result screen shows the language it detected. If it's wrong, trim the intro and run it again.

FAQ

Why do Turkish letters look wrong in my file?+

The download is UTF-8. Older programs sometimes open text as a different encoding. In Excel or Notepad, choose UTF-8 when opening the file.

Can I make Turkish subtitles?+

Yes. After transcribing, download the .srt. It has timestamps and loads into YouTube, Premiere or VLC.

Does it translate Turkish to English?+

No. It transcribes Turkish audio as Turkish text.
